What Does an Electrician Do?

Electricians work with wires, outlets, switches, lights, electrical panels, and lots of other equipment. They might help wire a brand-new house, install lights in a school, figure out why an outlet isn't working, or repair an electrical problem. It's a little like solving a puzzle—except this puzzle can help light up an entire building!

Electricians use all kinds of special tools to get the job done. You might find:

Being an electrician isn't just about working with wires. Electricians have to think, plan, measure, read diagrams, and solve problems. Imagine walking into a room where the lights won't turn on. An electrician has to investigate, test different parts of the electrical system, and figure out what's causing the problem.

Electricity Is NOT a Toy!

Electricity is incredibly useful, but it can also be very dangerous.

That's why electricians spend lots of time learning how to work safely. They use special equipment, follow important safety rules, and learn how electrical systems work before working on them. Kids should never play with electrical outlets, cords, wires, electrical panels, or tools. If you notice something electrical that looks broken or unsafe, tell a trusted adult.
